More on Smoke Testing →Your chimney should normally need sweeping once a year. However, if your chimney is constantly used over the season, or you continuously use a wood-burning appliance, it may need sweeping more frequently.
The reason is soot and creosote. Both build up inside the flue, both burn readily, and a chimney fire starts at well over a thousand degrees. A regular sweep also keeps the flue drawing properly, which is what stops combustion gases coming back into the room.

Many home insurers ask for proof of an annual sweep, particularly with a solid fuel appliance, and some won't pay out on a chimney fire without one. You get a certificate as standard, issued on the day.
Prices are fixed, so you'll know what you're paying before I start. If anything else needs doing while I'm there, we'll discuss it and agree it first — I won't just do it and add it to the bill.
